Mobile telecommunications network company, Vodafone, has initiated Internet-calling for mobile phones with Skype. The application is dubbed 'Starfish', which will allow users to chat via MSN, Yahoo, AOL, and Skype.
Jan Holzberg, the manager for the product at Vodafone Group said, “We have not yet decided if we will launch it, or the commercial terms and prices.”
According to the company, the calls utilise the voice channel from the phone to the base station. The call is then carried over the Internet.
The software used by Starfish is the same software used by Vodafone's smaller rival '3', owned by Hong Kong based Hutchison Whampoa.
The technology used in the new service symbolises a step forward in the relationship between Vodafone and VoIP. Analysts believe this step could impact Vonage.
Vonage recently surpassed two million subscribers, and Skype claims to have about 171 million registered users worldwide, analysts said.
