Sun Microsystems has opensourced Solaris code to further its open-source strategy that could increase market share, sales, and its influence among open source developers.

The code was released for “Open High Availability Cluster,” technology that ties many computers together, enbling companies or institutions such as Banks and financial institutions to keep services running all through the day.

This move is the latest step in Sun’s plan to eventually open all of its software to grow its customer and developer base. Opening Sun’s Solaris server operating system two years ago and its Java software development platform in November last year has helped the company slowly turn around and also have an influence over the developer community.

The open-source community is wary of corporate participants. Their fears are grounded in patent threats and exclusive deals only a few vendors have with Microsoft.
