According to a new report by IDC, server sales have shot up globally and open source Linux based servers saw best growths.
IDC said the sale of Linux-based servers rose by 19 per cent to USD 1.8 billion in the quarter. It however cautioned that this should not be seen as a victory for open source as Microsoft's Windows server revenue grew by 18.7 per cent to USD 5 billion and a market-leading 38.2 per cent revenue share in the quarter. IDC reports that revenue in the worldwide server Relevant Products/Services market rose by 6.3 per cent to USD 13.1 billion in this year's second quarter.
"The server market not only continues to experience solid growth, but revenue growth has accelerated over the past seven quarters," observed IDC's Enterprise Platforms vice president Matt Eastwood.
IDC noted that server sales in the under USD 25,000 category grew by a solid 11 per cent. IBM held onto its top position overall by capturing a 31 per cent share of the market. However the biggest surprise was Dell, which grew its factory revenue by an impressive 20.2 per cent.
According to IDS, blade servers continued to be the fastest-growing segment of the worldwide server market. During the second quarter, blade-server revenue grew by 36.7 per cent to USD 875 million. |
