Sun Microsystems Committed to Help Indonesian Government Champion Open-Source IT Movement

Sun Microsystems reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with the Indonesian Government and its various departments to boost information and technology (IT) development especially to elevate the use of open source technology in Indonesia.

It is strongly believed that this will help to solve Indonesia's unique and diverse information technology challenges.

Sun believes that if more people can participate in the economy using information technology, then the economy can grow exponentially. "Indonesia has made real strides to become both a major engine for economic growth in the Asia Pacific as well as a global city and the correct application of the most appropriate IT platform is crucial to whether or not Indonesia is able to maintain its momentum in this direction," said Crawford Beveridge, Sun Microsystems Inc’s Executive Vice President and Chairman.

Beveridge added, Sun Microsystems is putting the highest commitment to support the open technology movement in Indonesia, whether this is open standards, open source or open media formats. "We have delivered a clear signal that Sun stands ready to support Indonesia to the fullest," he adds.

Commenting on the use of open technology in the area of education, Beveridge adds, Indonesia is currently grappling with a shortage of skilled manpower in emerging global technologies. He said, Indonesia will gain relevant skills and employability and the global IT industry will have access to a pool of trained manpower on emerging technologies.
