.mobi, an internet address for mobile phones, has kicked off mobile domain registration, aiming for mainstream usage of domain. Operators and service worldwide as well as in Asia have already started to register their trademark names as .mobi domains.
Starting June 12, trademark holders will be able to register their trademarks as .mobi names. Individual users can file for registration starting August 28.
"The launch of this unique mobile domain is moving ahead at full speed and on schedule," said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi. "In our first week, we have registered domains for internationally recognized brands like Coca-Cola, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Palm, Sony and Time Warner. We’re making history, one .mobi domain name at a time."
For mobile operators, the .mobi domain can increase revenue from data services by encouraging use of the mobile Internet. The domain also creates new opportunities for hosted content and value-added services.
For content providers, .mobi will create new Internet-based services for mobile customers. Search services will also better recognize and catalogue .mobi sites, increasing in higher-quality results, user satisfaction and site traffic. For consumers, .mobi helps make mobile content and services easier to find, navigate and enjoy.
Backed by many of the world's leading mobile operators, handset manufacturers and software developers, dotMobi (the informal name of mTLD Top Level Domain, Ltd.) was designated as the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain by ICANN in July 2005.
dotMobi is backed by leading mobile operators, network and device manufacturers, and Internet content providers, including Ericsson, GSM Association, Hutchison 3, Microsoft, Nokia, Orascom Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Syniverse, T-Mobile, Telefonica Moviles, TIM and Vodafone. dotMobi is also a sponsor of W3C's Mobile Web Initiative. |
